Sports Injuries
Physical Rehabilitation Center In Hutchinson
Sports injuries typically affect the musculoskeletal system: muscles, bones, and connective tissues such as ligaments, tendons, and cartilage. For athletes of all ages, most sports injuries occur due to acute trauma, such as tearing your ACL or rotator cuff, or overuse of a joint, such as tendonitis.
From young children playing soccer and adolescents in Little League, to college football players and adult weekend warriors, Dr. Terry Goss at Hutch Physical Therapy & Wellness can help you overcome any injury you sustain while training for or playing your sport. The most common sports injuries we see and treat include:
- Sprains are traumatic injuries that occur when one or more ligaments that support a joint are stretched or torn in a fall or forceful blow to the body. Ankles, knees, and wrists are the most susceptible to sprains, but sprains to the back, neck, and shoulder can also occur.
- Strains are injuries to muscles or an attaching tendon that occur when either is subject to excessive pressure, such as during heavy lifting, fast acceleration while sprinting, or when you push a muscle harder than usual. Back and neck strains, as well as hamstring strains, are common sports injuries that require physical therapy.
- Knee pain is the most common sports-related joint injury. It often takes the form of runner’s knee (pain or tenderness in the front side of the knee cap), tendonitis, and iliotibial band syndrome (pain on the outer side of the knee). In severe cases, knee injuries involve bone bruises or cartilage or ligament damage, such as meniscus tears and ACL or PCL tears.
- Shoulder pain is common among athletes who participate in sports that involve repetitive motions, such as baseball, swimming, or weightlifting, or in contact sports such as football or hockey. Common shoulder injuries include rotator cuff tendonitis or tears, shoulder impingement, instability and dislocations, labral tears, and AC joint sprains.
- Shin splints are common among runners and athletes who participate in sports that require a great deal of running. They experience pain along the tibia, the large bone in the front of the lower leg. Shin splints are often the result of poor alignment or weakness in the leg muscles and occur when an athlete starts to run or sprint without warming up.
Other frequently diagnosed sports injuries include tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, hip flexor strain, fractures, and Achilles tendon injuries.
